    Our Family Christmas - Part 1

    Saturday, December 22

    1 (1)

    The garage is ready.

    1 (2)

    The tables are set for twenty-five people.

    1 (4)

    1 (6)

    We have a few festive decorations.

    1 (7)

    1 (8)

    There's even blueberry saltwater taffy from Maine. (Thanks Mark and Diane.)

    1 (9)

    Josh was an early arrival - looking quite handsome wearing his new glasses.

    1 (10)

    Look at all that food - and I didn't make a bit of it.

    Chris, Kristen, and Deb took care of all the cooking and planning. I know Abby made the rolls, and I expect other granddaughters did some of the work too.

    1 (12)

    Jere also had extra responsibilities  - especially in bringing food after Kristen hurt her back the night before.

    ~~~
    Each year we find it challenging to make the very familiar story of Jesus birth meaningful and not routine. So on this night we read the story from Luke 2 in a rather unique way.
    There were fifteen grandchildren (and friends) coming, so we chose fifteen verses from a version that is not quite so familiar, printed them out, cut them apart, mixed them up, and handed them to the young people.
    ~~~

    It went something like this:

    7 She gave birth to her first son. She wrapped him up well and laid him in a box where cattle are fed. She put him there because the guest room was full.

    18 Everyone was surprised when they heard what the shepherds told them.

    1 (14)

     16 So they went running and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the feeding box.

    11 Today your Savior was born in David’s town. He is the Messiah, the Lord.

    20 The shepherds went back to their sheep, praising God and thanking him for everything they had seen and heard. It was just as the angel had told them.

    1 (15)

    13 Then a huge army of angels from heaven joined the first angel, and they were all praising God, saying,

    9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord was shining around them. The shepherds were very afraid.

    12 This is how you will know him: You will find a baby wrapped in pieces of cloth and lying in a feeding box.”

    1 (16)

    8 That night, some shepherds were out in the fields near Bethlehem watching their sheep.

    19 Mary continued to think about these things, trying to understand them.

    14 “Praise God in heaven,
    and on earth let there be peace to the people who please him.”

    1 (17)

    Jesse cannot read, so Josh helped him with his verse.

    17 When they saw the baby, they told what the angels said about this child.

    15 The angels left the shepherds and went back to heaven. The shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this great event the Lord has told us about.”

    6 While Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have the baby.

    10 The angel said to them, "Don't be afraid. I have some very good news for you—news that will make everyone happy.

    Christmas Meal & School Concert

    Monday, December 17 & Tuesday, December 18

    1 (1)

    We had a delicious lunch and a great time at the TFC Office on Monday, December 17.

    When it was over, I discovered that I had taken a picture of the food but none of the people.

    1 (2)

    Before heading home to my office, I asked Cerwin to pose with his current project. He's making a tract rack for the Life-Saver Chapel at the Elkton, Maryland, TA TravelCenter.

    1 (3)

    This will be his next big project - a new chapel - which he will begin in early January. This one does not yet have a truck stop location.

    1 (4)

    The next evening we went to our local middle school for the Holiday Concert presented by seventh and eighth grade.

    You may remember that we sat on the balcony the previous week. This time we were in the third row - which was nice in some ways - but as you will see, there were a lot of photo obstructions when sitting so close.

    1 (5)

    We filled an entire row - plus one. Left to right: me, Josh (black and grey shirt), Jared, Deb (talking to our sister-in-law, Dot), Jesse, Ian, Roy, Kristen, and Jere. Cerwin sat directly behind Jere.

    1 (7)

    Jesse kept playing hide-and-seek with me. I finally "caught" him in a shot.

    1 (8)

    Poinsettias on the stage.

    1 (9)

    Mrs. Shirk - Director of the orchestra.

    1 (10)

    This was my view of Andrew (royal shirt & yellow tie).

    Andrew is a grandson of my brother Dale and his wife, Dot.

    1 (11)

    If I timed my shot correctly, I could sometimes capture his face.

    1 (13)

    1 (15)

    Our granddaughter Jana (center) sang in the chorus.

    1 (16)

    2 (1)

    She also did a great job on the keyboard.

    2 (2)

    2 (4)

    A select group of girls singing A Joyful Noise.

    2 (5)

    Emily (a neighbor and friend from church) played the french horn.

    2 (7)

    2 (8)

    2 (9)

    Andrew also played in a special trombone number.

    2 (12)

    The directors being recognized.

    2 (13)

    Jana, Roy, and Deb after the program.

    2 (14)

    Jared dressed up for the concert.

    2 (15)

    Ian wore a school hoodie.

    2 (16)

    Kristen, Jana, and Jere

    ~~~
    Another delightful evening. Thanks for inviting us, Jana.
