Delivering the New Chapel to Rochelle, Illinois
Saturday, October 27
5:45 a.m. Cerwin starting his log book.
The new chapel is ready to begin its journey from Marietta, Pennsylvania, to Rochelle, Illinois.
8:25 a.m. Cerwin and I were in the chapel for the first two hours, then Glenn drove, Cerwin was in the passenger seat, and Rachel and I followed in their CRV.
This car was obviously having trouble under the hood.
10:30 a.m. Glenn and Rachel follow us out of a rest stop.
Leaves in this area were beyond their peak.
However, there were many times we saw pretty leaves.
A field of pumpkins.
Yellow pumpkins
As we approached western Pennsylvania, we began seeing electric trucks heading east due to the coming storm, and by the time we were in Ohio it became obvious that someone is preparing for a major power outage on the east coast.
If that barn could talk.
2:35 p.m. we received a phone call from our friend Gene Gehman asking where we were. He read my blog from last night saying that we were heading west on I-80 today. We were about two miles apart in Ohio heading toward each other!
What fun to see him. Thanks for calling Gene.
An old rusty railroad bridge.
A beautiful sky.
A pretty little church
This tractor looks like it is well equipped to do field work.
We continued to see electric truck after electric truck heading east.
A grass fire along the road.
About this time we learned that Rachel was counting the electric trucks.
Though we saw most of them in Ohio, we continued seeing them in Indiana.
By the time we reached our exit in South Bend, Indiana, she had counted 400 - and thought fifty had probably gone by before she started counting. And she only counted the ones that looked like this. There were also lots of other style electrical service trucks and big rigs hauling generators and tree trimmers. I expect we saw between 500 and 600 vehicles heading east to participate in storm damage assistance.
5:18 p.m. Our exit near South Bend.
Glenn, Rachel, and me in the Bob Evans next to our Micro Motel. We all look like we had a long day
- and we did.Bed looks good tonight!
We are looking down on the chapel.
~~~
We plan to be at our destination for the 11:00 a.m. worship service on the old chapel in Rochelle tomorrow morning, so it's time for me to get to bed.
Glad you made it safely this far. Rest well.
That looks like a beautiful trip! Love the shot of the old barn, and of the orange and yellow pumpkins! I've been hearing about the preparations for the hurricane -- it's a tropical storm right now, but is supposed to hit the northeast with a vengeance on Monday. I'm sure that's where those electric trucks were headed -- it sounds as if they will be needed! Be sure to check the weather before you leave for home -- and stay safe!
That's amazing that all those electrical trucks were heading this direction! We have never been without electricity for more than a few hours. I just can't imagine going days without it.
How fun that you passed Gene! That happened to us last year when we were traveling back to State College after a weekend in Lancaster County, and we found out that some friends were traveling back to E-town after taking their daughter to Goshen. We both got to the Sheetz at Duncannon at exactly the same time!
Have a blessed day.
@musicaljean - We were wondering how many electrical truck were heading east on other interstates. We did enjoy meeting Gene. Thanks, we will be blessed.
@ata_grandma - Thanks!
@slmret - We are keeping up on what is happening at home with texts and phone calls to and from or children. Diane and Hannah are at our house - visiting from Maine. We will be at Rochelle until Wednesday morning, then we go to Michigan to pick up a trailer for the next chapel, so we won't be home until Friday.
how interesting to see all those trucks! looks like a very pretty trip you are having ~
@fwren - We are having a great trip. Thanks.
@cerwindoris - I hope the storm will be over with by Friday! And it's good that you have Diane and Hannah at the house -- hope they'll be safe too!
What a wonderful trip with such lovely pictures! I like the church and the railroad tracks the best, but all are fabulous. Glad you made it safely. Can't wait to see more pictures of future journeys.
