Before & After the Snow
February 13-14
Birds always seem to be busy before and after a snowstorm.
We’ve has so many pretty, little snowstorms this winter.
By little I mean less than one inch of snow.
They seem to happen at least once or twice a week.
Everything looks pretty when it is snow covered.
It also looks pretty when it is melting.

All the living things look as if they are working so hard to prepare for the storm (the first two shots) or to survive it (the little shoots of pine peeking out of the snow)! It is pretty!
@slmret - He was working hard at getting the suet. I love pictures of green things poking through the snow.
Aren’t Carolina wrens just the cutest birds ever? Love ‘em ~
@fwren - Agree!
Love the birdies! Here is the suet recipe I tried, there are lots of others with ingredients like oats, but I stuck to this:
1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/2 cup lard
2 cups cornmeal
1 cup flour
Optional: Chopped raisins, nutmeats or peanut hearts.
Melt the peanut butter and lard, then stir in the dry ingredients. Put it in the refrigerator to harden it or to store it. You can warm it up a bit if you want it to be soft. Otherwise you crumble it up.
Another similar recipe:
Bluebird Monitor’s Guide (Page 75)
4 cups cornmeal, yellow preferred
1 cup unbleached flour
1 cup peanut butter (without sodium and sugar added) Mix well. Add:
1 cup sunflower chips
1 cup ground peanuts (unsalted, of course)
1/2 to 1 cup currants or stewed and chopped raisins Mix well again. Then, add:
1 cup melted lard (preferred), or suet. Mix again.
The mixture should be somewhat crumbly and not too moist. Store it in plastic bags or containers in the refrigerator, or in the freezer for longer term.
This is a very nutritious treat which many songbirds love, especially our bluebirds.
Wow sorry that took up so much space! PS one of the ladies at our meeting took some home, and she has had bluebirds all week eating it!
@BluebirdChris - Thanks so much for that! I will copy and print it.
